| As a story I
chose a native North American creation myth - the Cheyenne story
of the sparring brothers Malsum and Glooksap, a story also common
to the Arapaho, Fox and Mohicans of the Algonquin Nations. I transposed
this story to the setting of Victorian Dublin and I replaced Malsum
and Glooksap with Charlie and Sydney Chaplin.
I had been reading Charlie Chaplin's biography
whilst working on 'Moll Flanders' and I found the perfect parallel
to the Indian myth in young Charlie's childhood relationship with
his brother and their insane mother.
